Unidentified tree in our garden

You may remember I have mentioned our "Lollipop" tree in the garden.

Ian (Grumble) has PMed me asking what the tree is.

The tree was here at least 22 years ago when Lyn bought the house, we keep it trimmed in the shape of a lollipop.
In April it flowers as in these pictures, and although we constanly trim it to shape, later in the year we see a few green cherries on stalks.

A previous visitor suggested it may be a seedling Prunus, but the bark on the trunk is not like a normal Prunus, sorry no picture of the bark.

So if anyone has any clues to a name, please post here.

Its a stunning tree. Looks like Malus but the cherries would suggest a Prunus of some variety.
Do the fruits never mature?

Does look like a Malus does it not? Any chance of a picture of the fruit?

Right, I'm off up to Hilliers Arboretum to see if they know!

Back from Hilliers... They suggest Malus too, Floribunda is the consensus. Do the flowers turn white eventually Malcolm?

Picture of fruit for Palustris and also bark.

Ian (grumble)  will have to think about if the flower turns white, and will see if other pictures show that.

The flowers turn to a light pink.
Have looked on net for the fruit and it is described as greenish yellow with a hint of red which matches with the picture I posted don't you think ?

So is looking like Ian is correct in it being Malus floribunda, will wait till Eric (palustris) comes back with his thoughts.
