Windows 7 & IE8 odd interaction with this Forum
« on: January 30, 2010, 07:27:08 AM »
Since running Windows 7 (with IE8 the default browser), I've found that if I type in a lot of text to the entry screen for posts/replys to this forum, when the scroll bar appears on the right and I've entered at least one row of text that causes the text to scroll up, after each character I type, the text scrolls back down hiding the line I'm typing. From that point, it's almost impossible to use as the text bounces up and down each time you press a character. It also means you can't see what you've typed.

Has anybody else seen this? I'm considering downloading Firefox, Safari or Chrome to see if those work better.

I've also encountered this once before John, but haven't had time to fully test it.

I haven't been able to contribute much to the Forum recently due to us having a lot of decorating, etc. done to our house which has disrupted computer access (George is fully aware of what's going on, so I won't elaborate again).

Same set-up of Windows 7 and IE8.  I think I was using the 64-bit version of IE8 at the time.  However, I've had to change to the 32-bit version of IE8 as Adobe haven't upgraded their Flash Player browser plug-in to work with the 64-bit version yet.  As a lot of web sites use Flash nowadays the web site/s don't appear correctly without this plug-in.

As a test John, copy all that long text to Notepad and log-in to the Forum using both versions of IE 8 and see which one (or both) is causing the problem.

Hi John I have just gone to IE8 to see if I can replicated your ptroblem. I do not normally use Explorer. Firefox does not have this problem and so far neither has this. I am being long winded so that I can see what hgappens when I reach the end  of the line. Sorry no bother here.

Just to add to this mystery, I have just done a very long test posting using both IE8 32-bit and 64-bit versions, and I have not been able to reproduce that phenomenon.

Very odd.   ??? :-\

Well, I was just fine until I installed IE8.
Now I have the same problem as John.
I'm using Windows XP

All was fine until the text region was filled, then things went haywire -  I didnt analyse in the detail that John described as I'm utterly fed up with investigating the text problem mentioned in this posting.

To do that message, I had to abort, and post the message using Firefox.
Anyone else having problems?

Using Windows 7 64-bit, and IE 8 32-bit and 64-bit.

No problems experienced in any recent postings on the Forum.

The problem happens when you post a message which is bigger that the text window used for input.

Good to see no one else is having problems but I note that Paul is seeing different font - Google Chrome -v- IE8

My posting at the top of this topic did indicate I was having a similar problem to John with the text window during a posting.

However, I have updated Windows 7 on the Microsoft web site since then and have not had that problem reoccur.

Maybe worth some Windows updates George as a possible solution.  :-\

Hi George,
I've never figured out what actually caused this problem and in typing this answer, I'll discover if I still have the problem.

I've recently made a few posts on www.highdeforum.com - which uses the same forum engine as this - and didn't get a problem - but I was useing their 'quick post' feature which doesn't give you all the fancy editing capabilities. I'll have to try a post there with the full response.

So, I experimented by typing enough to fill this dialog box and as soon as the scroll bar activated on the right, the problem showed up.

I save ny work and go in and finish my posting with Mozilla.
