I'd like to be able to go through my monthly statements and tick off each transaction against my account on the program-is this possible?

Hi John
Under
Transactions
tab use the program
Manage Transactions
.
Use the C and not C buttons.
That's exactly what they are for.
Right click on the Reconcile, Exclude and Include buttons for help options.
Read about how to Reconcile the
Bank Genie
way.
Does that help?

It is easy and very useful, but make sure you uncheck the wide columns box if your screen resolution does not let you see the right hand edge.

It still confuses me, I always seem to be over or under my bank statement's ending balance!
What do the asterisks mean?

The asterisks are to do with Reconciling statements.
All explained in the User Guide John:
http://www.bankgenie.net/UserGuide/421/421.html#Reconciling
and that section leads to this screenshot which will help:

and more tricks revealed in this one:
