No-dig gardening
« on: April 06, 2006, 10:35:05 AM »
Found this article in the wikipedia
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/No-dig_gardening

I had an email enquiry recently about this, so it seems that some people are looking at this method.

Have any members tried this technique? If you are thinking of converting then pay attention to this portion of the article:
Converting to a no dig system is however a long term process, and is reliant upon having plentiful organic matter to provide mulch material.

I think its a great idea Harry.
It would be great to hear from someone who has actually tried this method. It certainly makes sense.

If starting with a new patch, I would consider spraying with something like Roundup to eradicate the perennial weeds. Then apply the mulch.

How do you use your compost material at present? e.g. what time of the year to you apply it.
Do you dig it in or apply it as a mulch?

Hi George
The area I am using for my no dig method is 40' long and 6'wide in preparation it was dug over 1 spade deep hand weeded to remove any perrenial weed and couch grass. The whole area was then covered with a 4" layer of compost and composted manure and 3 weeks later was again covered with a further layer of compost/manure this I hope will smother any annual weed and anthing perrenial will be removed by hand. I will let you know how things progress the main strucure of the border will be perrenials and bulbs any other space will be filled with annuals.

ps, how do I post photos on Ideas Genie

Happy gardening

To post photos:
Click "Additional Options"
Click Browse, and find the photo on your computer
Select the photo
You are returned to this screen
The photo name should appear in the "Attach" field
Click Post

Its fairly simple. The only thing is, your photos must be less than 125 kb. If your photo is bigger that 125, make a copy of the photos, and resize the copy (dont resize the original!)

Good luck!
