Crocus tommasinianus Roseus
« on: March 02, 2009, 11:48:13 PM »

We like the species crocus, this one is increasing slowly over the four years we have had it.

I'd like that one as well! Beauties! Lovely photo Malcolm.

Have you ever tried bringing them into the house as a cut flower?
We have these white ones. They dont open outdoors. Just tightly upright petals. My wife brings them in and puts them into a little vase, and within the hour they have fully opened to about 4ins, and giving off the most beautiful scent.

We have a lot of 'tommies'. They do spread rather rapidly though. Ours manage to keep ahead of the mice even. Firends of ours have to dig out loads of them every year to stop them choking out other rarer bulbs.

Eric, I use a link to Photobucket to post pictures, but you can do it through Flickr as well.

This is what I was trying to post http://www.flickr.com/photos/erichardyuk/3325412312/
I don't know the name of this one so perhaps the experts could tell me.

Eric, any photo you want to post on the Forum must be within the following parameters:

  • No wider than 660 pixels; any bigger and you get a horizontal scrollbar, which doesn't look very attractive.
  • The size in kilobytes (kb) should be no more than 128kb.
  • The photo here can be jpg format.

When you want to insert a photo into a topic you have started, click on the little button (second from left above the 'smiley faces'), hovering your mouse over this button will say "Insert Image". When you do this you will see the following text inserted - img  /img surrounded by square brackets - [ ].

You need to insert the FULL path to your photo in between the two middle square brackets - img]Insert link here[/img.
An example in your case would be:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/erichardyuk/190301827/in/set-72157594186256751/photonamehere.jpg

This is the exact link text that the Forum software expects.  ONLY insert the photo name with its .jpg extension at the end of the link, and don't add the photo size or anything else in this coding.

If you then click the Preview button before you post your message you can confirm that the link to your photo is working.
If you get a small box with a red X in it, then your link is not correct.  Check the directory path AND make sure the photo name is typed exactly the same as the one at Flickr.

Then post your message as normal.

If you have any problems or queries just get back to me.

Laurie.

Thanks Laurie for the help.
I think I have mastered that one. Sorry to have been using your thread as a tutorial! I have discovered that I load far too large photos to Flickr to transfer. I reduced this one to within the paramaters you set out and bingo!
By the way, do you know the name of this one? It is pretty but short lived. It looked like this on Saturday and by Monday it had vanished. There were only leaves left.

Excellent work Eric.  What a lovely photo too. ;D

You don't have to apologise.  Submitting photos is very popular with our members, so it's a valuable lesson to go through - particularly with our newer members.

As you look through the various Forum topics you'll notice that I also submit large-size photos (660 pixels wide), as I think it's good to show as much detail as possible of the flower concerned.  That's just my personal choice, not a necessity of course.  ;).  I'm also able to keep the file size in kb reduced to an acceptable level via Photoshop Elements 7, so everything works great.

It's good to see you've also got your Profile photo working now.

I personally don't know the name of the Crocus you posted, but I'm quite sure there'll be someone else on the Forum who may know.  Keep checking back to see how the ID gets on.

Laurie.

Eric. Sorry I didn't get back to you re posting pictures here. I was out earning a few pounds on my day job.

Glad that Laurie sorted it for you.

Here is a link that may help in identification of your crocus

Thanks for the Link Malcolm. It looks interesting. Mind you,  I often find it hard to identify things from photos but I will have a good look.

As far as I can see that is a Crocus thommasinianus. The way to id crocus is mainly through the shape of the stamen and style (the orange/yellow bits of the middle of the flowers) followed by various other things including the shape of the tunic round the bulb. I have the only decent book on Crocus and the keys for Crocus id are quite big and complicated.

Thank you for that. I was beginning to wonder whether it was a crocus tommasinianus myself when I looked at the pictures in the Pottertons Nursery website that Malcolm directed me to.

Nice to see weve got that sorted out  :)

As you know, we now have two "Eric"s on the forum folk!
Palustris (Eric) has been with us for a long time now and all the postings address him at personal name level.
I think we can cope OK. I think its more friendly when we are on first name terms.
