Woodlice in apples
« on: October 23, 2010, 01:47:42 PM »
Ive never had this before.
My ripened apples have holes either around the ends of the core, or on the surface (up to the size of a 1p piece).
Inside the cavities there can be one or more woodlice.

Has anyone else had this problem?

You got snails! The wood lice will take advantage of the damage done to the skin of the fruit by snails, blackbirds, wasps etc. They will also creep into the core if there is a hole. We grow an apple called Catshead which is hollow and almost every one has an earwig in it.
If the apples are in store then just as likely you got mice!

A range of baddies there Eric :o
Are woodlice not capable of doing that damage by themselves? I haven't seen any slugs on the apples.
Mind you I have a very large and voracious quantity of slugs and snails this year, much more than any other year, judging by the damage to my new flowers. They have devoured everything I planted this year, until I put down pellets. Then there is carnage!

The apples are not in store. They are coming off the tree like that.

Whose garden is it anyway ::)

No, woodlice teeth are not strong enough to chew through apple skin. They live on partly decomposed material. They just like the dampness of the apple and the shde.
