Breathtaking Eric :)
When were the photos taken? I'm absolutely stunned if they are all in flower so early in the year.

It must be a pleasure to walk into that greenhouse every day, enjoying the plants coming into flower. You have a choice selection of plants there Eric. You must spend many hours caring for them.

From the other active thread, do you enter plants in the shows you visit?

Photos were taken yesterday, P. allionii is in flower now for most people. No I don't show any more.

Wow!

Do you keep your P. allionii plants in the greenhouse all year round Eric?
Ive tried them outdoors before but there is too much competition from grass invasion in the beds in my garden (my worst weed - I have a number of fine varieties of the common or garden grass!)

They do live in the Greenhouse, but I do have some outside and a couple in the Alpine house. They really dislike winter wet so are best suited to indoor culture.

I thought all Primulas were happy in wet conditions ::)
Thanks for that info Eric. I'll try them in a different part of the garden next time.

Winter wet on the leaves that should have said. P. allionii grows on overhanging cliff faces in (I think)the Dolomites. They have very sticky leaves. They like a reasonable amount of water to the roots, but in their natural habitat, they rarely if ever get wet foliage. P. allionii is not really an outdoor Primula anywhere in Britain.

They wouldn't feel too comfortable in our rainy climate here in Ireland :)

That is very good information Eric. I will try some in the greenhouse. They really are beautiful plants.
I love all Primulas and I'd love to be able to grow that variety.

Do you grow Primula sieboldii, Blooms introduced a range of these from Japan a few years ago, one called 'Snowflakes' is still around. :)

George. I am sure there is a Nursery in your part of the world which is famous for its P. allionii. http://www.timpanynurseries.com/Catalogue.htm
We did have P. sieboldii in a couple of forms once upon a time, but it seems to have gone the way of all flesh, sad, 'tis a lovely Primula.

Yes, Ive been there a number of times Eric.

I took lots of photos of their gardens and used them to make up a CD of their Catalog, but they showed little interest when I presented it to them :(
I was very disappointed - I'd spent ages on that project.

I plan to visit this year and will look out for the P. allionii. Ive bought them there before!!
With your tips, they will be grown in the greenhouse this time around!

I'll look out for Primula sieboldii 'Snowflakes' Paul.
Did you do the trials for it?

Wonder if it is easy to send slightly rooted pieces of allionii through the post. Never tried, but when one cleans them up for winter (a tedious and time consuming task) bits always come off in ones hand.

I suppose it would depend on how quickly they travelled. they do root easily, but never allowed them to dry out as they would in the post. Will try and remember to do it when I clean them up. Wrapped in moss they may survive.

Ive used a loose wrap in wet tissue then all in a clear plastic bag once. I'm sure your moss idea would be OK. Posted at the beginning of a week would be best to avoid a weekend in the postal system. I'll deal with them as soon as they arrive. Many thanks for suggesting this Eric.
