London Olympics 2012
« on: July 17, 2012, 11:11:21 PM »
With the build up to the London Olympics, we managed to get to one of the Torch routes.

A friend of ours in the Geocaching community, Wendy Morrell, was chosen to be a torchbearer, and we saw her going through Upton, Poole last Friday in her wheelchair with her assistance dog.

Here is a link to read about Wendy Morrell Torchbearer

The weather was sunny and dry and the turn-out was magnificent, with people lining both sides of the road.

This is probably the one and only time we'll get to be this close to an Olympic Torch relay, especially in the UK too, so it was a great privilege to be there.

Laurie.

We're all set to watch the opening ceremony tonight at 9pm, and then a couple of weeks of being glued to the TV  ::)

Anyone else interested in the Olympics?
Laurie.

Indeed yes, Laurie.
I watched the first hour of the opening ceremony at my sons house in Belfast (but then had to travel home and catch up on email etc).
What a spectacular 8)
We were all VERY impressed, more like in AWE.
The planners of that extravaganza deserve knighthoods for ingenuity, originality, artistry, organisation and for transforming incredible ideas into reality.
Truly amazing. Hope its on iPlayer so I can "Catch up" the remainder of the show. Ive never seen anything even remotely like it.
In the middle of this current saga of gloom and doom its such a breath of fresh air.
Brilliant - and well done Great Britain 8) 8)

PS Somehow, I missed your first posting in this topic, Laurie. My apologies :-[
Lucky you to see one of the torch bearer stages. Nice photo - looks like it was a fine day :)
I'm sure this topic will be pretty active for the next few weeks :)

At this time of the XXX Olympiad in London 2012, members of the Ideas Genie Forum Community from all nations are invited to bring forth their own botanical torch and participate in this event.

In the spirit of striving for excellence in your own gardens and the willingness to help your fellow gardeners achieve their goals, we are offering you the chance to be an Ideas Genie Champion.

The size of the garden does NOT matter, and is included for reference purposes only.  Large (from hundreds of square feet to acres of land), Small (from a window box to a patch of grass or flagstoned yard), Medium (anything in between the other two).

So, just for a bit of fun you can rate your own garden and award yourself Gold, Silver and Bronze medals in the following categories:

(1)  Location - your surroundings and exposure to sun.
(2)  Garden Design - (within the confines of the size of your garden) - flower beds and border planting, shrubbery, patios, vegetable plots, winding pathways, ponds, areas for wildlife, etc.
(3)  Variety of plants in your garden.

To get things started, this is my entry:

Garden size = Medium

Location = (Gold)
Garden Design = (Silver)
Variety of plants = (Silver)

Anything in my Bronze medal position - - no (I'm not being too critical  :D )

You can of course introduce your own categories if you wish.  In sections where you don't achieve Gold, then there's room for improvement there and something to aim for in the future.

Don't be too critical though - it's just for fun  ;)
