Puzzle No 9
« on: March 09, 2007, 09:46:46 PM »
Theres 3 plants to Identify here.
Again, photos taken on my holiday to Malaga, Spain in Sept 2005

You can see the main subject - its absolutely breathtaking - even non gardeners in our group were impressed.

However, it wasnt until I was preparing this photo for posting that I noticed the third plant to be identified - the large tree like plants in the background of RIMG0018. Ive done this quite e few times in the past - taken a photo - got home, had a good look and then spotted a brilliant specimen in the background of the photo!!!

Heres your 3 puzzles:

mmm... I'll let you have another guess  ;D
A clue? I'm sure you'll find loads of them in Monserrat!

OK, OK, I confess  :-[
Ice cream is definitely one of my weaknesses. I love the stuff - irresistible. That and Apple tart, Apple crumble, apple sponge... apple anything! Good for making sure the body doesnt slip through roadside gratings.

My guess would be Brugmansia suaveolens commonly called Angel's Tears. Tom

Hello and welcome Tom! My, you've found your way around the forum VERY quick! You only registered this evening!

Well, you've passed some very useful info to me.
I was calling it a Datura. I didnt know the species, of course.
But, doing a surf with the name you've given, I quickly established that you are absolutely correct, and that Datura is like me - a bit out of date!

In case anyone else is lagging behind the botanists (those clever people who keep correcting plant names from something we are familiar with to something obscure) theres good info on this site:
http://www.floridata.com/ref/B/brug_sua.cfm
We learn that the Brugmansia formerly were included in the genus Datura, which now includes only the angel trumpets that are annuals or short-lived perennials; herbaceous as opposed to woody; and have erect rather than pendent flowers.
Visit the web page for more interesting info

Well done Tom. Thats what I call instant impact.
Now, I know from our telephone and email communications that you love trying to grow unusual plants up there in bonny Scotland.
Perhaps you'd like to to post a message in the Introduce yourself section and tell them about your gardening at Dalcross Castle?

As for the photos, theres two more in there yet to be identified folk!
