Its happened before (as Kathy and Laurie will testify!), and fortunately I had a phone number in each case to get in touch in the good old fashioned way!
Incidentally, I did get that test message I sent to my btinteret account - about 4 hours after sending it.
It looks like BT had a little problem, so someone there must have been have been feeling the heat!
