Skype - Video problem

Toby (bossgard) is at his wits end trying to get Skype running fully featured.

When he starts Video, his computer crashes.

He bought a Logitech video
We couldn't get it to work with Skype
However, he then installed Logitech Vid, a program similar to Skype
it worked fine! I could see him, he could see me, and we could chat.
However, he wants the Share Screen functionality, so I can give him demos and talk him through things on his computer etc.
Currently, Logitech Vid does not have that feature.

Now in desperation, he has purchased a  Microsoft Webcam VX2000 (video and audio test ok)
We tried last night.
He called me on Skype using Call (Not Video call)
I answered taking the option Reply (but not reply with video)
He could hear me
I could not hear him
When he clicked Start Video, his computer crashed.

I asked Toby to do the Skype Video test:

When I click on Video settings, is when I crash.
It was that way with Logitech and now with the Mircrosoft Webcam.

Some info about his installation:
Internet security- he is running AVG Grisoft ver 9.0.725
He went into his Firewall settings. Every thing marked Skype is allowed internet communication.
The webcam is plugged directly into the back of CPU.

Is anyone running AVG Grisoft ver 9.0.725 successfully with Skype?

You summed all that up very well!
Two things I might add:
The Microsoft VX2000 Webcam was labeled on the outside of the box, as being compatible with Skype.
Also, I'm running with Windows XP SP2 which has a firewall of its own, and that firewall is turned off. By default, I guess, at least I did not turn it off, anyway.
For clarification, the picture I see of myself on the VX2000 is during video test

George has been wonderful through all of this, I don't think he got any sleep last night

Another thing for clarification:

I'm running AVG (Grisoft) Internet Security ver. 9.0.730. It's been updated.
Would appreciate any and all help!

Sorry to hear about your problems Toby.  :(

We're no longer running AVG software.  Our new PC's (Windows 7 Home Premium) came with Norton 360 Internet Security Suite, and we don't have any web cams installed to test this feature Toby's having problems with.

The only suggestion I can offer at this time to Toby is to check the web sites of your Graphics Card manufacturer, and your web cam manufacturer, for the latest drivers.  Even if you buy some new hardware, the drivers that are included with it could still be out of date.

I don't know if this will solve your problem Toby but it's worth a try - if only for diagnostic elimination purposes.

Its a nightmare on those forums.
I would be very careful with some of the "advice" I see there!
e.g.

Well, if my computer was working fine apart from Skype, I would not follow that advice.
Could end up with more problems than you started with.
