George:

Have a suggestion to make on working with the materials in all of the Sessions. Particularly, since you are using the screenshots, and please continue to do so.

For example, Session 4 User Guide ? Vegetable Project ? Adding our first task, has several pages of Text, including references to 18 Screenshots.

I always do print-copies of the Text matter, and then print-out the Screenshots. Working with the print-copies is quite difficult to do, since I have so many pages to shuffle. The Text copies are numbered by my printer in the upper right corner, so sequence is easy to maintain. The Screenshots were another matter, no clue to which Screenshot belonged where.

So in the Text matter, I wrote a number next to each Screenshot, as #1, #2, and #3 up to #18. And then marked the print-copies of the Screenshots to match.

Is there an easier way to keep the Screen shots straight, as possibly, when you list the Screenshot in the text matter, could you code it, maybe like Screenshot/Adding Tasks 1/20-ga047s01, which is information for #18 supplied in the footer printed at the left bottom beneath the printed Screenshot?

The same I guess, as referring to Illustration l, Illustration 2, etc.

Can you make sense out of this suggestion?

- Toby

OK Boss, I'll do something on cross-referencing.

Meanwhile, heres a tip, or two, to help you to identify them.
Visit the User Guide website.
1) Hover over a Screenshot link
The URL of the link you are "about to visit" (when/if you click) appears at the bottom of the web browser
When you visit the page and print, the same URL should appear at the bottom of the printed page

2) If you RIGHT click on a link, then click Properties, the Address/URL is given

3) In sessions 3, 4 and 5 the screenshots do follow an easily recognised sequence, Toby.
In Session 4, the first screenshot URL is
http://www.garden-software.co.uk/vegetables/AddingTasks1/1-ga011s01.jpg
2nd is:
http://www.garden-software.co.uk/vegetables/2-ga047s01.jpg
3rd is
http://www.garden-software.co.uk/vegetables/3-GA047S09.jpg

Note the "cues" in the screenshot order
1-
2-
3-
etc (that was for my own benefit! = now it useful to you)

The GAnnnSxx= screen names (where nnn= 047etc and xx is the screen number within a program)
They are in no sequence of course, since as you click buttons through the lesson various screens appear, then you finally return to the first screen etc
However, the screen names are clearly visible in the title bar of each screenshot

Does that help?

The update to GA047 is unrelated to the web site screenshots Phil.
From what I can see, the bug I worked around (in GA047) was within the software I use to produce IG Pro.

It runs under Flash Phil. Its a good subject for another topic if you'd like to post the question Phil, with a link to the swf file page.
We can all learn from sorting that problem out.

George:

Amazing! The title bar's really all I need, I think.

But, perhaps additional referencing might be a good thing to add as you continue with the Sessions.
Again, thank you!

It wouldn't work on one of my other machines with Vista on, installed Adobe Flash Player, it worked then.

I am sure its not a Vista, XP, 7 thing, just install flash playerPhil and try again.

Q?s needing A?s:

Using PLANT NUMBERS:
It?s my understanding that Plant Numbers are Unique Numbers,
that are only applied once and if the plant data is deleted that number disappears,
never to be used again. Is that correct?
Are they assigned numerically, at first point of data entry?
Or are they assigned at random, meaning not numerically?
I know that they can be accessed (used) in GA049 REPORTS;
Can they be accessed and printed on GA048 LABELS?
Where or how else can I make use of them?

Using DELETE BUTTON:
In GA100S02 Editing Plant Profile; is it better to delete a plant, or terminate it?
If I have goofed badly in entering data, or just don?t like the plant,
is it better to just get rid of it (delete), or by termination?
By termination, I mean to retain the plant in the system,
but explain the reason for termination.
Like plant died, or seed no longer available, or replaced by better variety, etc.

Using a SORT to PRINT:
Can Sort and Print my vegetable (or any other) plant inventory by FAMILY NAME?
I would like to be able to do that to help in laying out veggie beds for
CROP ROTATION.

Phew!

Plant numbers were not intended to be "visible". The few instances were for my own reference when testing.
However, they seem to be gaining popularity, so its easy to extend.

1) Are they assigned numerically
Yes, in numeric order

2) are they assigned at random
No, nay never

3) The program takes the largest number in your database and adds 1 for the next plant number

4) if a plant is deleted AND its Plant Number is has the VERY LAST plant number in the database, the number will be resused.
That is a very special case.
In ALL other cases, that plant number will never be reused.

5) Can they be accessed and printed on GA048 LABELS?
Had a quick look and don't see it anywhere.
Tell me which screen you'd like to see it on, and I will provide

6) Where or how else can I make use of them?
mmm you tell me where you'd like to see them.

7) Using DELETE BUTTON:
In GA100S02 Editing Plant Profile; is it better to delete a plant, or terminate it?
That is entirely up to the user.

9)

That to me is a good idea. You have a record, and it may help you making the same mistake again

No, but you know a man who could fix that ;)

George:

Happy that you appreciated the mental stimulation!!

Here goes:

Here are two different samples of copy that I want on two different GA048 labels to print for pot-stics to label my vegetable seed plantings:

?Carrot 'Autumn King Cr270 #456-10' (Ter) (Brt Org)?

?Cauliflower 'Early Snowball #263-10' (Hum) (Wht)?

Both appear as above in GA048, I?m not editing copy and placing the Plant Number there. What you see is in those samples is what I?m keying in for my own Plant Number ?#456-10, #263-10, however they are the same number(s) as the pre-assigned Plant Number in Genie Pro 5, except for the -10, (which indicates date of purchase of seed ? 2010). Rather than do that plant number step myself, I want the software to do it. Could the software plant number just be placed there automatically? I would put the -10 in when I key in the Cultivar.

I?m trying to think if there would be any reason that you WOULD NOT want the official Plant Number to be part of the Cultivar Name for identification purposes? It seems to me that they just go together (like apple pie and ice cream); the Plant Number reinforces the description of the Cultivar. You would probably ID the plant first by the number, rather than by the name.

Phil, what do you think? When you sow your seeds would you like to have the plant number on your post-stics along with the Cultivar? Am I making sense? Isabell, does this make sense to you? Anybody else?  Malcom?

I?m using #5366 15x2 label layout.

G - I can use the sort and print on Family Names anytime, it?s a mental stimulation process right now for me. Take your time, though! Have fun, enjoy life!

I just saw the new lessons today, so I am going to work on lesson#3 right away. I actually have been working in my vegetable garden today, and a few times last week since we had a few rare, sunny Oregon sun shines including this morning. I did a bit of more work on inputting data for the veggies in the last week, did not get too far because my Father in Law was visiting from Nebraska.

I am finally getting my vegetable garden beds organized, the way I was talking about before.
Which means I will have to change the beds in IGPro again ;D

Since we got the chickens last year and chickens can help me eat the bugs on the not used beds, or before I get them ready for growing I decided I needed to change my layout again. Before I had a lot of 3'x3' beds, some 3'x6' and a few huge 3'x9'.
Aside my garden is completely devout of vegetables I don't want the hens on my beds eating and scratching out my plants or contaminating them, so I need a way to keep them restrained to the beds which are empty, so I am building a PVC hoop house with chicken netting which will just fit over my 3'x6' beds. Having all different sizes does not work so well with this so I have taken apart my beds and extended or shortened them, so they are all the same size. I have one more to go before I finish them off with my compost and mint straw. I have now 12 - 3'x6' beds, and two mini beds 3'x1-1/2' which I tucked behind other beds. So I have a total of 225 sqft of growing area, not including paths plus a 6'x9' Asparagus bed outside the fenced area. I have more room to add more beds if I want to, but I think that will do me for now.

So now I will be able to contain the chickens on one or two beds (I might make the hoop house that wide) and it will always fit perfect.

My lower garden I now mainly use for fruit and my Artichoke plants. I might get a new apricot tree, since my other one died a few years back and I still want to add an apple tree which will be a good baking apple for cakes and pies. I am a bit indecisive on that apple tree, can't decide which one to get. I have been eating a lot of apples from the farmers markets, suggestions from the farmer for baking/pie apples, but the Americans seem to prefer a more sweeter apple for baking, while in Germany pie apples are crisp, fruity and a bit tart. If anybody has suggestions for the perfect apple tree for me, please share. I have been working on getting an Apple tree for more then two years now, if I don't get one soon I might as well forget it, there we will be moving to Portland in maybe 5 years.

So I will go now and work on Lesson # 3.

Thanks again George for taking this time to design these Lessons

Isabell
