Britains Big Freeze

No didn't watch it George.

After tonights minimum temperature is recorded, (being the end of the month) I will have a few words about the winter down here so far.

They answered a question I had in that program.
I tried to build a snowman with my grandson one day.
The snow was too dry and crumbly. It was also impossible to make snowballs.
They explained on the program that the snow is dry and powdery like that when the temperatures are below -5
I cant recall it being like that before.

Big freeze ?

Well as you probanly know I keep a record of negative temperatures at night here in the back garden.

At this time (end of January) last year we had recorded 45 nights with a negative temperature, totaled up the negative temperatures were 156 degrees centigrade.

This year we have had 34 nights with a negative temperature, and a total of 105 degrees centigrade.

Coldest night in the same period last year minus 10.3 c  and this year minus 7.6c

So it has not been a bigger freeze than last year down here, so far.

Mind you it will be costing us a fortune in electric to heat the greenhouse to +7c, two banana houses to +1c, the bird aviary to +12c and conservatory to +10c 

It was minus 6.1c last night

I thought the programme was very low in real Scientific information. There was no attempt to explain why the Jet stream and the Polar Air stream have changed position and stuck. Apart from the different types of snow (and that was not really explained) what else did anyone learn? I saw nothing in it that was new to me.

It was enough to tear me away from the computer for a while.
Better than the usual Saturday night entertainment on the other channels

Thats my less sophisticated measure of statistics

watched it very interesting, i especially enjoyed the film after  thougt it very appropriate to put a film on like that after the big freeze

We have just had the warmest January on record!
Everything in the garden is popping up like mad!
A little bit too wet to work the soil, though.

very good, if you have not seen the film the day after tomorrow watch it, i beleive it won some awards for it special effects
