How's this for a flower
« on: July 03, 2010, 10:34:53 PM »

A flower on our Musa Basjoo Banana plant, you can't see the very small bananas behind the flower.
Actually the flower was formed last Autumn, just below leaf stalk level, so when I cut the leaves off last winter to protect the plant, I had no idea there was a flower bud hiding in the main trunk.
Now the flower is produced the whole trunk will gradually die, but the plant does produce new growth from under the soil. And there are another three trunks anyway.

We are still waiting for the Strelitzia "bird of paradise" to open it's flower. So two good pictures for our wpg plant guide.

It should turn a few heads on Sunday, and lead to a lot more questions from our open day visitors.  ;D

Hope you have a very successful day tomorrow Malcolm!

P.S. That flower looks like it could do with an item of lingerie :-[ :D

It's always my fault, ask Lyn.  ;D

Yes just about ready for the visitors.
We have delayed putting out our direction signs tonight, because of the local carnival festivities including beer tent  ::)

Not that we have been there, but the local kids will have, and had too much to drink, and we may well have had missing signs or them pointing in the wrong direction. So delayed till 7.30 am ish tomorrow morning.  :'(

We have a family with husband in a wheelchair ariving before we open at 11am. We can't take wheelchairs during an open day, so agreed they could come early, which of course puts a little bit more pressure on us.
Forecast here is for sun and cloud, not so hot, so good weather for garden visiting.
Not looking for the 308 I think that came to our first opening of the year last year, but over 200 would be nice.

Thanks all

Malcolm

You are lucky not to be expecting the weather we've had here today in Erins green isle. Wet and miserable :'(
Cant complain too much. The garden will benefit from a good soaking - but the sun would be nice afterwards ;D

Hope the cakes turned out well and make sure you set the alarm. Thats an early start.

The Banana flower is gradually folding back the layers of the bud ?. Not sure what is underneath.
