October in Palustris' Garden.
« on: October 17, 2010, 05:04:58 PM »
A quick fly round the garden at the beginning of this Month (Oct). Lots of Asters and a few Gentians, no names I am afraid.
The first few were taken from the Shed roof, why waste the opportunity when I had to be up there mending it?

Feet firmly back on the ground now.

Hat off to you there Eric, you've got a fabulous garden.

There looks like a heck of a lot of work to keep on top of it all.  How do you find the time to look in on the Forum.  :o

Laurie.

P.S.  A few of your photo links are not showing up.

I agree with Laurie, how do you keep on top of that large garden. Its looks very well maintained -  a credit to you and your wife!

I love those Asters and Gentians Eric.
Asters do really well here. They establish and spread easily. I divided my favourites a number of times and have them in different parts of the garden. I don't have any white varieties. From the photos, am I right in saying you have shown two varieties of white?
I have not (yet!) succeeded with Gentians. Ive bought a number of Gentiana sino-ornata over the years but they don't return reliably.
Ive tried Gentiana saxosa (the white species) and it didn't do well.
Gentiana septemfida was the easiest. It kept going for years, but finally it was lost in the canopy of a plant which is supposed to be tender- Phygelius aequalis (a deep pink variety) which survived and spread in my border.

Any tips on growing the Gentians Eric?

What is the yellow flower in October2010-068.jpg?

The gentians really like acid soil and lots of food before flowering.
The plant is Helianthus Lemon Queen.

Thanks Eric.

What do you use for plant food?
I used to buy Chempack, No 2, No 3 for general growing on my plants from seed and cuttings and No 8 for Rhodos etc
I could only find one shop locally which sold it, but this year they didnt stock it.

Do Gentians fall into your general description of Alpines Eric?

Another wee tip, Eric
Try putting a blank line between each of your photo links.
It should separate the photos and make them more distinctive.

When I right click on the "failed ones" in your original posting and get to the Info page, it says the type is GIF
When I right click on the ones you posted today, it says the type is JPG
Could that be the reason?

Sorted now. Wont re-post as it would make the messages a bit senseless.
