Lilium lancifolium var. flaviflorum
« on: September 09, 2012, 10:41:20 PM »
A surprise for Eric.
These (below) were grown from the seed you sent me a few years ago Eric.
Am I right in saying they are  var. flaviflorum?
On the internet, the species Lilium lancifolium (in the main) seems to be orange. These ones grown from your seed are yellow.
Ive molycuddled these a bit, in the greenhouse. From tiny strap leaves the first year to something which looked like flowering size growth this year. I had four pots of them and planted them in different locations. The slugs devoured the first pot planting (but they are making an attempt to regrow). I put slug pellets around the second planting, but after the initial carnage, the slug pellets obviously washed into the soil and the next braver generation came along and devoured then as well. They climbed the stems and chewed the flower heads off!
The ones in these photos were planted in a small dryish island bed at the base of a small tree in my front garden, more slug pellets etc etc. Bingo, I finally got a few flowers!
I have to say, they were well worth the effort - they are beautful flowers. Many thanks Eric.

Good oh. Mine have reached a good 8 feet tall this year despite the Lily Beetles.

I didnt realise they would grow THAT tall!
Lily beetles,huh :o
Maybe Ive been blaming those poor slugs and snails in the wrong - do you find they are also a problem?

Yes, I would say that almost every Lily this year has had snail damage. The Lily beetle damage comes much later, when the plants are well grown.

I see. All plants are at their most vulnerable (and obviously tastiest) when they first emerge from the ground. Once they had "their heads up" I thought they were safe from slugs and snails. Not so this year!

Hah! I found a snail sat right at the top of one of the ordinary Tiger Lilies this afternoon. munching happily on the flower.

Glad its nothing personal from my little pests.
How do they manage to get up an 8ft stem to your lofty flowers :D
Ive found them on apples this year (on the tree of course) out on a limb as it were. I'm beginning to wonder if they have night wings :-\
I pulled one today. It had a hole, and inside was an earwig :o
I blame London 2012 (the Olympics) ;D

We have an Apple called Catshead. They are very large cookers which have a hollow centre. There is always a resident earwig in every one. Not a problem except that I feel about earwigs the same way as many ladies feel about spiders or snakes.

Do they cause the hollow centre?

No, that is the way the apple grows, they just find it a convenient place to hide. Grief I am shuddering now!

Lily beetles,huh :o
And in case you need reminding what they look like, George, here are a couple trying to make even more lily beetles.

I am impressed that you have been able to grow them from Eric's seed. They look lovely.

Ha  :o Sure they are only playing leapfrog ;D ;D
That's a magnificent, quality photo Eric 8)

They grew very easily from the seed Eric (Palustris) sent. There must have been a very good hit rate judging by the number I raised. If their parents reach 8ft in Eric garden, I'd better find another spot for them ::)

Strange though, this year there have been hardly any of the bulbils in the leaf axils which is what I sent George. I collected up the few there were for someone else who fell for these things.

Never found any round the base of the lilies, of any of the T lancifolium, so I assume something eats them.
I have got a double form of the ordinary Tiger lily, ugly to my eye, but some likes it.

Found another 2 seed in the axils yesterday 8)

We'd need cctv to find out whats taking the seed Eric. I was a bit surprised to see they had disappeared so soon. Cant see slugs eating them, can you? Birds perhaps?

Any photos of the double Tiger Lily?

Thanks Eric. I like it 8) Is it as easy to grow as the ones I have?
Do they come true from seed?

I have just collected the few bulbils they produced this year. I will send them. They are small, but they should grow, like the L.l.var falviwhatever.
