The C= Cleared column
« on: December 02, 2012, 09:58:28 PM »
I've been asked for a number of times if there I could provide a feature in Bank Genie to allow users to mark transactions with a C to indicate they have been cleared by the Bank.
Users who are using Bank Genie to replace other unsupported Money programs are used to this feature.

Bank Genie doesn't actually need that functionality as the method is to exclude uncleared transactions from the statement being reconciled.

Ive bowed to the pressure and have now made an amendment to the program Manage Transactions - BS421.
Here's a screenshot showing the new C and Not C buttons in action.
http://www.bankgenie.net/UserGuide/bs421s01-11-cbutton.gif

Two downloads are required:-
1) To get the latest version of BS421, click the Bank Genie on the Web button under the Help tab in Bank Genie.
Navigate to the program updates.
Download BS421.

2) You'll also need to download the latest fileset, as the buttons have Help and User Guide links.
Download the Fileset and remember to read the special instructions provided for downloading the fileset.

I'm relieved you managed to get past your download/firewall problem Paul (henri62).
These little things are set to try us  :D

Another Paul has emailed to tell me about that Fileset status Phil.
In my haste last night (MOTD2 ::)) I omitted to upload the 3/12/12 edition.
Ive uploaded that today and Paul (P) has emailed to say its up to date.
Please download it again.
Glad the C feature is keeping you and others happy Phil. It was a fairly simple change to apply.

I have now got used to excluding.  I was a msmoney user and I did like the cleared method.  However you get used to using new programs, and overall I rate bank genie highly and wouldn't have pushed for the 'c'.

I will though almost certainly use the 'c' button as it will help me progress through a statement steadily, as opposed to sometimes losing my place, and then exclude at the end.

i used to use msmoney aswell and i tend to enter all my bills etc upto 2 mths in advance that way i knew what money i had left at the end of each month approx so i could accomodate for the unexpected, and the cleared function in msmoney helped me to keep upto date with my online banking plus with a c marked you dont get lost on your statement, as you well know you can do a transaction to come out 3 april and they dont take it till the 8 you can leave it uncleared moved it down etc, the c function for me is a valued and very welcome function in bank genie

Thanks again Phil.

Many thanks for posting that message Paul (Pratmill - we have two Paul's posting in this topic, so need to differentiate).
Now you have made your first posting please feel free to join in the discussions and post a new topic as you feel inclined.

I'm delighted to have made the seasoned C users feel more comfortable with Bank Genie!

Hi George,

I've downloaded BS421 and the Fileset - I now have nice coloured buttons which don't appear to add or remove a C!
What have I done wrong??

Hi Roger

Ive checked the code behind those buttons, and theres not much that can go wrong :)

I can think of one possibility for not seeing the C column.
Have a look at the screenshot:
http://www.bankgenie.net/UserGuide/bs421s01-11-cbutton.gif

As you can see, the C column is a new column on the extreme right side.
Try stretching your screen wider - if not wide enough that column will not be visible.

Then try again:
Click (highlight) any transaction in the list in screen BS421S01, and click the C button
Does that help?

Hi George,
All ok now - it was the screen - dohh!  Proving really useful already.

Just a couple of other points.
When entering new transactions they seem to either appear as C or NOT C depending upon the status of the previous entry. Is this intentional?

Also, I've always wondered why I get the 'ding' sound when entering a value in the blued 'Transaction Amount' box?

Many thanks

Roger

No, certainly not Roger. I'll check that out.
Are you getting that effect when you use Copy then Paste a new transaction?

I turn sound off on my computer ;D
When you type data into a field and reach the limiting number of characters, the program will probably "ding" at you and the cursor will remain at the end of the data field.
Its a warning sound.
That's the safety built into Bank Genie.
If that feature was not available, your typing would jump into the next data field.
You can imagine the result if you didn't get that ding :D

Ive now made a program amendment to fix that Roger (and all Bank Genie users)
Go to the program updates page and download the latest version of BS421 and BS408.

Thanks for reporting this Roger. If anyone spots anything unusual like this please let me know.

As a Quicken user (and George's co developer for the related functions) I would have pressed for this ages ago (indeed I think I recall asking for something similar). However, having used BG4P for some time now I find the BG way of doing things with exclude is just as effective (and quicker!).

Thanks Barry. To me its less confusing when un-cleared transactions are Excluded from the list being reconciled.
