Floods
« on: January 13, 2014, 03:29:01 PM »
The Thames is pretty full at the moment. We went to Marlow on Friday and Benji pushed Anthea towards the towpath where we normally walk. I had my iPhone with me and took these: -

Thus far and no further  ::)! The water was actually moving closer to Anthea as she sat there. Benji was taking his own photos.

Our usual seat by the river is in the far distance!

The next day we went to Bourne End, down river. It was a much brighter day but once again we couldn't do our usual walk, it stopped here. The boat is moored alongside the north (Buckinghamshire) side of the river. The row of trees is along the south (Berkshire) side.

I am not sure whether this was the correct place to post these.

No sign of this weather abating just yet either according to the forecasters  :(

Great photos Eric.  I hope Anthea wasn't getting too scared about the rising waters around her  :o

Nothing wrong with them here Eric  8)

I agree with Laurie - this is a good place to post these photos Eric.

We were rather fortunate in N Ireland in that we didn't get anything like the flooding in the South of England.
We've seen the alarming scenes on the news channels.
My heart goes out to those whose houses were flooded and those who had power failures (or both  :o).
Having a flooded garden is one thing - it must be like a worst nightmare to have ones home flooded.

I couldn't agree more, George. The pleasures of a riverside property can be overrated. It is at times like this that I am glad we live 300 feet above the valley floor. It does mean using a hill with a gradient of 1 in 5 though, which is not so good in the snow.
Our neighbour's daughter Sophie and family live in Oxford where the water has been lapping at the top of the threshold of their back door. They do have special fittings to put across the door which they got AFTER the floods last time when they had a lot of damage.

The River Thames is still very full, but nothing compared with the terrible floods in Somerset. I can't imagine anything more miserable than having one's house filled with water. Here are some recent shots taken at Medmenham with my iPhone.

This is the road going down to the river!

This far and no further!

The parallel railings in the next two photos is actually a bridge going over a stream

My heart also goes out to the farmers. We in N Ireland are not as badly hit as England, yet the farmers cant take their tractors into the waterlogged fields to tend their livestock.
Last year it was snow :o

That's so coincidental, I almost feel apologetic.

Very little of it stuck and it has stopped now.
Lovely sight of politicians running around trying to avoid being the one who gets the blame.

Here is a very strange phenomenon. On the 1st February I took this picture of Fingest Church which is in the heart of the Chilterns (in Midsomer Murder country  :)) very close to us. It was at the height of the floods but as you can see, the ground was perfectly dry.

On the 8th March, after over a week of perfectly dry weather I was passing and saw this. I was amazed, it is not near a stream and in over 60 years I have NEVER seen water in the graveyard. I am not sure where it all came from.

That strikingly large tower is Norman.
Both photos were taken with my iPhone

Is it a water table effect? (ie ground water)

Sorry Barry, I missed your question. My friend who knows about such things assures me that it is indeed the water table which has risen considerably after all the rain.
