Working with Captions
« on: December 15, 2006, 04:58:47 PM »
Some definiitions
Captions are:
Names on buttons
The text that describe input fields
Controls are the names given to fields, buttons, check boxes, lists etc

Any user can change the captions on screens which have Bi-Lingual translations
Screens which have bi-lingual translations will display:
a) a radio button which allows the selection between 1) English and 2)The "other" language in the currently installed Language set.
or
b) A flag

To change captions, start the program Translate>Captions-GA356

For purposes of this exercise, lets assume we have the English-Dutch language set installed.
In the upper left pane, Click on the name of the program of your choice.
The names of Bi-lingual enabled screens for that program appear in the upper right pane.
Click on one of the screen names.
The names of the controls for the chosen screen appear in the box immediately below (mid-right)

Click on a control:
The Caption for the control in English is shown in a Text Box in the lower left of the screen
The Caption for the control in Dutch is shown in the Lower Right pane.
Simply translate the text you see in in English (left) into Dutch (right).
When you begin to type, the Change button will appear.
Click the Change button when you hav typed the tarnslated text.

When you go back and run the chosen program, the text you have typed will appear in the captions.

Returning your Captions file for publication.
Email the following files to me as attachments:-
captions.dbf
captions.cdx
captions.fpt
In IG Pro, these files are located in the folder: c:\program files\ideasforgardens\ifg_igp
In Bonsai Genie, these files are located in the folder: c:\program files\ideasforgardens\bonsai genie

More information
1) Text regions in yellow are disabled. You cant type into disabled fields.
2) The program automatically advances to the next control after you click Change
3) The arrow-left and arrow-right buttons allow you to Go Next and Go Previous quickly through the controls.
4) When using the arrow buttons, the program will advance to the next screen automatically when you reach the last control
5) When using the arrow buttons, the program will advance to the next program automatically when you reach the last screen
Just play with the buttons! Its easier to see than to explain.
6) You can also change the ENGLISH text on the buttons.
To change the ENGLISH text on the buttons, check the control Allow Changes to ENGLISH text. The text field will become white (enabled)
You can type and save your changes.
7) MOST IMPORTANT: All your good work will be overwritten if you download a new Language Set.

Play around with the translation program (GA356) , Andre, but dont start using it seriously.

Ive added more captions to the captions file, and I will publish this tomorrow evening Tue (I hope!)
When you download this, you will be able to translate every single caption on the initial screen for GA037
Also, The Program selection Menu.

I salute you for finding your way around the system in a different language! Take a well earned bow.

New Updates have been posted.
In addition to Captions, the Menu screen is now resizable and font size adjustable (controlled by 2 settings in your Preferences)

To get up to date with this, download:
Latest Menu
Latest version of GA037
Latest version of English-Dutch language set

Whats been going on:
I sent a list (by email ) of all the text you see when English-Dutch radio button is set to English.
Andre did the translation to Dutch by return email.
I used the program Translate> Captions-GA356 and copied and pasted the translated text

If you'd like to see what Andre and I have done:
After you install, switch to Dutch on the Main menu.
It looks best when Resizing is set ON, and the add points to font value is set to 0 (use the Preferences program).
If you are curious, run the Translate> Captions-GA356 program. Click on IGPRO in the top left window.
In the bottom left you'll see a pane in English. You cannot edit.
In the bottom right you'll see a pane in Dutch (when English-Dutch language set is installed) You CAN edit - you type in the translated text.

I sent the same list to Peter in Switzerland, but in this case for the Bonsai menu.
Peter did the translation to German.
I hope to make up an English-German language set this evening and make it available for download.

English speaking users can use ANY language set, as one language in each language set is English.
