« on: January 31, 2009, 05:46:55 PM »
These are the folks who list names that plants are supposed to be called.
http://www.ishs.org/sci/taxlist/ctaxlist.htm.
Many of them actually publsih lists of plants.
Useful for checking the names we submit to the Master Database.

Heavy going! Need to back and study that resource some more.

I drilled in a bit and found this link:
http://www.pollyhillarboretum.org/userfiles/plant%20collections%20book%202008%20(2).pdf
Save it herea s a reminder to check it out again
Its laid out in the form:
The Polly Hill Arboretum Collection Book 2008
1? Scientific Name 3? Accession # 5? Source 7? Current Location 9? Native Range
2? Common Name 4? Family 6? Year Received 8? Form Received
Which, is the sort of detail you enter when you create Specimen records in IG Pro
example with data:
1- Abies balsamea 'Nana'
2- Dwarf Balsam Fir
3- 77-071*A 4- PINACEAE
5- Marty Milner 6- 1977
7- Conifer Row 1 8- plant

Getting into it now Eric:

ONLINE registrars
CAMELLIAS (ICS)
Access to all the registered Camellias here:

List of Genera whose cultivar registrations are controlled by the RHS
http://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/registration.asp
e.g.
RHODODENDRON
The RHS is the International Cultivar Registration Authority for the genus Rhododendron.

Quote
The International Rhododendron Register and Checklist, second edition, was published in November, 2004 and is available from RHS Enterprises at Wisley. The new Register & Checklist, which runs to 1544 pages bound in two volumes, contains information on over 28,000 entries for cultivar and Group names. It incorporates all names known to have been used within the genus Rhododendron up to the end of December 2002. Thus all azaleas, azaleodendrons and vireyas are included, as well as the core of hardy rhododendrons. All registered names are clearly indicated.
28,000  :o

Ahaaaa!
Downloads on this page (look for the supplements)
http://www.rhs.org.uk/learning/publications/registers/plantregisters.asp#rhododendron
Now, has anybody a few hours to spare to punch some of that stuff into IG Pro?
Lots of REALLY good information on each cultivar on the supplements listing

Great find Eric!

It comes down to the question as to what the Master Data base is intended to be does it not?

Now thats a good question.
Its capable of being many things, and it would be very suitable for keeping records of registrations, in a searchable and easily retrievable form.
Theres some very interesting things in those records, particularly the parentage of the cultivars.
