User Guide - Session 11

Using a SUPPLIER Catalog supplied on CD
In this session you will learn how to:

  • Use a Supplier Catalog on CD

Sample supplied: Timpany Nurseries - Specialist in Alpine Plants
Visit the Timpany Nurseries website

A Supplier Catalog on CD is a special form of a Flower Genie database.
We have teamed up with participating Suppliers and converted their plants lists into Flower Genie Format.

Each plant can have a supplier description.
Each plant can have one or more photos.
Each plant can have a hyperlink to a photo of the plant on the supplier web site. This is normally a low resolution photo, so its much better if disc photos are used.
Each plant can have a hyperlink directly to the BUY page on the supplier web site, where you can buy on line.

This makes it very enjoyable to explore a Supplier Catalog, and check availability - live-on-line.

As with the Master Database, you can copy Plants selectively from CD, into your personal Flower Genie database on your computer. If the plant has a photo, that is also copied for you AND it is automatically linked to the plant.

This allows you to build up your wish lists over winter, do your research on each plant, and buy when the time is right.

Heres a few tips on how to get the most from this resource.

  1. Put the Catalog on CD in the drive
  2. Start Flower Genie
  3. Start Program: My Plants and Gardens - FG037
  4. Use the Data Source pop-up to select Timpany Nurseries from the drop-down list
This closes your Flower Genie database (disc) and opens the Catalog on CD

    Things you can do:

In PLANTS mode (you are in PLANTS mode when you start this program)

  • You can do all the things explained for the Master Database on CD

    In addition
  • Select a plant.
  • Click the Who sells this button.
Screen FG037S02 appears, with the Plant Suppliers button automatically clicked to suit Timpany
  • The suppliers description is shown on the right
  • At the bottom of the page there are three important hyperlink buttons
    Try this:
  • Click on the Go to the Supplier Website button to visit the HOME page of the Suppliers web site
  • Click the Show Web Photo button to link directly to a photo of the plant on the supplier web site.
This is a deep link, to the best photo available (bypassing the thumbnails).
  • Click the Buy this Plant button
This takes you DIRECTLY to the BUY page on the supplier web site

    All pretty simple

  • COPY A PLANT - From the CD into your Flower Genie database
  • In screen FG037S01 - Select a plant.
Click the Copy This Plant button
    Screen FG100S40 appears
    Edit if you wish.
Use the Google Search button if you wish
Use the SurfBoard if you wish
    Click the Add button
The Plant is added to your personal Flower Genie database on hard disc
If the Plant was linked to a photo, this will also be copied to your hard disc.
The photo will be automatically linked to what is now a NEW plant on your computer.

    In CATALOG mode -
  • Click the Catalog button, located to the left of the A-Z buttons
Its the same button as the Gardener button you are used to in FG - but with a special caption= Catalog to suit the application.
  • A new set of controls (pop-ups and buttons) appear
  • In this mode, you can explore the format of the Suppliers Catalog
  • Click on the Section pop-up and explore the list
  • Timpany dont have sections in their on-line catalog, so Ive put all their plant into the sections called Stock
It could be divided further into Plants by colour, Plants for an Alpine House, Plants for a Rock Garden etc.
  • For demo purposes only, Ive created a section called Plants with Photos
  • The Plants with Photos section lists a few of the plants I snapped when I visited this Nursery for a photo shoot in 2002
  • Timpany is actually a Nursery and Gardens.
Ive created sections for the garden areas, again for demo purposes
If Timpany were to document the plants in the areas of the garden (using Flower Genie) it would be of great interest to their customers. It helps when you can see the plants actually growing in a garden, as mature plants.
One very good Nursery close to Belfast does that. All plants in the garden are clearly labelled. Thats the secret to success. Hopefully Timpany will do likewise.
  • The Who sells this button is also prominent in this mode, leading to exactly the same screen as above
