Making a SUPPLIER Catalog on CD
In this session you will learn how to:

  • Make a Supplier Catalog on CD

Supplier used in this exercise: Imberhorne Lane Nursery - Camellia specialist (UK)
Visit the Imberhorne Lane Nursery web site

If you are a Plants or SEED supplier, you can make your own Catalog on CD using Flower Genie.

The Catalog on CD can be categorised similar to your hard copy catalog, or on-line catalog.
You can add additional categories e.g. by colour, by plant type, by application, by height etc.
Each plant can have one or more photos.
Each plant also can have a hyperlink to a photo of the plant on your web site.
Each plant can have a hyperlink directly to the BUY page on your web site, where users of the catalog can buy on line.

You can include prices in your catalog, but if you have a web site this is optional, since users of the CD can click on the hyperlink you provide for your items, and visit your web site.

Users can also make up mail orders, by selectively copying plants from your Catalog on CD.
This can be sent to you by email for price and availability checking.
You can give a quote for Postage and Packing, and respond to the email.
The customer can then print the Mail Order and send it with payment by post.

Heres how to create YOUR catalog on CD.

Creating your Catalog on CD
The finished article can be used as a Master for mass production, or produced in smaller quantities using a CD writer.

 Overview:
You create a special backup of your database
You run a special program to encapsulate your disc photos
You drag this backup onto a blank CD
Its that simple!

  1. Create a folder at root level on your computer Hard disc:
    fgdata_sets
If your hard disc is c: then the full path to this folder is:
    c:\fgdata_sets
Theres a reason for using the name fgdata_sets
Its hard coded into Flower Genie, and used to indicate that the folder is a SWAP database.

Now we need to make a sub folder under fgdata_sets. To do that:
  2. Double click on the folder name.
Make a new folder called Imberhorne Lane Nursery
    This name is NOT important.
However, choose something meaningful, as its the name that will show up in the Data Source pop-up
The full path to this folder is:
    i:\fgdata_sets\Imberhorne Lane Nursery

Now we need to make a sub folder under Imberhorne Lane Nursery. To to that:
  3. Double click on the folder name.
Make a new sub folder called fgdata
This name IS important. Dont change it
The full path to this folder is:
    i:\fgdata_sets\Imberhorne Lane Nursery\fgdata

  4. Start Flower Genie
  5. Run program System (menu tab)>System Paths - FG197
  6. In Alternate System Path click the Get a folder button
  7. Find and select i:\fgdata_sets\Imberhorne Lane Nursery\fgdata
Note: A backslash is required at the end of the path. Flower Genie will do this for you. However, if you do this manually, be sure to add the backslash.
  8. Click the SAVE Changes button
  9. FG197 closes

    Making the special Backup
  10. Start the backup program System> Backups - FG201
  11. Change the Backup to pop-up to Alternate Backup Directory (folder )
  12. Click the Do Test button
(Flower Genie only allows you to proceed If files are intact)
  13. Click the Do Backup button

    Encapsulating you disc photos
In effect, this operation embeds images of your disc photos (linked to plants in your catalog) into the database.
The original disc photos are not changed or deleted.
This is optional, and is intended to protect the copyright of the images used in the Catalog.
  14. Run the special program supplied by ideasforgardens.com for this purpose

    Create the CD
  15. Insert a blank CDR disc into the drive of your CD writer in your computer
  16. Drag the fgdata_sets (including the sub folders) folder from your hard disc onto the CD
  17. Write the folder to CD.

Testing your Catalog on CD (as a User)
  18. Insert the new CD into your normal CD drive
  19. Start Flower Genie

  20. Start the Preferences program - FG198
  21. UN-CHECK I'm an advanced user
  22. Click Save changes
    Program closes
You are no longer accessing data as a Supplier, but as a customer.

  23. Start the program Plants and Gardens - FG037
  24. Click on the Data source pop-up
  25. Assuming the CD drive is d:, the database on CD will appear in the pop-up list as:
D drive - Imberhorne Lane Nursery
(Flower Genie recognise the folder structure on  the CD)
  26. Select D drive - Imberhorne Lane Nursery from the pop-up list
  27. Explore the Catalog on CD
  28. In FG037S01, click the Catalog button.
  29. Make sure your catalog sections and contents are correct
  30. In FG037S01, make sure the Who Sells this link works as expected
  31. In screen FG037S02, make sure the supplier show immediately as Imberhorne Lane Nursery and that the item is in a “ready to click BUY” state.
  32. In screen FG037S02, make sure the Go to Supplier Web site button links to the HOME page on your web site
  33. In screen FG037S02, make sure the Buy this plant button links to the correct BUY pages on your web site

This CD can be used as a master for re-production in quantities.
